THE STORY BEHIND THE SIGNAL

The Moon is not silent.

During the Apollo era, seismic instruments recorded a world of deep moonquakes, shallow activity, and impacts. This explorer brings a sample of those observations onto a lunar globe.

Deep moonquakes23 records
Shallow moonquakes8 records
Meteoroid impacts19 records
Artificial impacts8 records

Reading the map

Surface view projects events onto the Moon for easier exploration. Interior view places them at their catalog depth. Marker sizes are symbolic: this sample does not provide magnitudes.

A sample, not the entire archive

The 58 records span 1969–1977 and retain the project’s original Apollo-era dataset. The catalog combines deep source regions and individual seismic events; it is not a complete event inventory. Dates are displayed in UTC.

Explore your way

Drag the globe to orbit, scroll or pinch to zoom, and select a marker or a catalog row. With the globe focused, use the arrow keys or WASD to orbit, + / − to zoom, and R to reset. Date boundaries are inclusive. Select a year in the timeline to narrow the catalog.
